If your search results are not specific enough, try refining your search by entering additional terms.
For example:
searching for… | …finds |
young | young, young woman, the youngster, young love, young guns |
young woman | young woman, young woman in a boat |
The search results are not affected by the use of umlauts or capital letters.
Your search results will show the perfect matches for your entry. This is known as an “exact search”. But you can also search using just the stem or beginning of a word. You do this by placing an asterisk (*) after your entry.
For example:
searching for… | …finds |
motor | motor |
motor* | motor, motors, motorway, motorbike, motorcade |
You can exclude particular terms from the search by putting a minus sign in front of the words you wish to avoid. Always leave a space before the minus sign.
For example:
searching for… | ...finds |
young | young, young woman, young women, the youngster, young love, young guns |
young -woman -love | young, young women, the youngster, young guns |
young -wom* -love | young, the youngster, young guns |
With the help of quotation marks, you can search for entire phrases. Phrases are several words that are separated by spaces and enclosed within quotation marks (“young woman with”). Your results will contain these exact words in the same order that you entered them.
For example:
searching for... | ...finds |
“young woman with” | young woman with hat, young woman with fur coat |
| but not… |
| young woman sitting, young woman drinking |
You have the option of narrowing down your search results even further. This is done by activating the checkbox beneath the search field. You can then select the relevant criteria to further refine your results.
